A Brief History.

In 1980 Burton residents Keith and Christine Forster founded Colorscan Imaging Products Ltd then known as Colorscan 90. Trading from a property in Derby the company was one of the first pioneers of ‘Same Day’ photographic processing. The company quickly became well established in the local area and the introduction of mail order processing was introduced to reach nationwide customers. With the mail order processing becoming popular a bigger site was needed for production and the move to our 4,000sq ft factory in High Street Burton Upon Trent happened.

Business was growing, however in 1994 14 years after the company was founded Kodak launched the first digital camera. It was with this that Keith and Christine realised that the future of photo processing laboratories was not to last and with this a new venture was needed to be developed.

Keith and Christine decided to move the company into digital printing. The way this move would happen was to retrain staff members and using their experience in producing high quality photographs the company began to produce products which contained digitally printed images. With this the company changed its name to Colorscan Imaging Products Ltd.

Keith and Christine noted that there was a gap in the market for a company to produce pump clips for guest ales. For the next 3 years Colorscan Imaging developed work into the production of pump clips while at the same time still working with photo developing, this continued till 2000 when the final remnants of Colorscan 90 was laid to rest.

2001 brought exciting times for the company a move to a new home on Scalpcliffe Road just a mile away from the High Street building, this allowed the business to continue to expand for the next 12 years. However at this point it became clear that the site had served it purpose and either expanding or relocating to a larger home was needed.

Relocation was the route that was taken and in 2013 we moved into our new 40,000sq ft home on Centrum 100 business estate in Burton Upon Trent, this has given us the room to expand.

The company has always prided itself in investing in the latest digital print technology. 2012 saw an investment of £750,000 in a new digital label press with inline laser cutting. This allowed for a move into low to medium volume label industry by avoiding charges for expensive dies and plates. The services the printer provided were extremely popular, and a second press was purchased in 2014. This was to accommodate the increase in print volume, and also to ensure a redundancy was in place for customers.

Currently the company employs a team of 28 people and counting. The business also currently spans three generations of the family with Keith and Christine’s three children involved with the affairs of the company. Over the 37 years of business, Colorscan has adapted to changes and has always invested in the latest technology. There is no doubt that the future will bring new challenges and changes. However, no matter what, Colorscan will always adapt and ensure quality and care for customers.
